Shades of rock
“Well I realise that I’ve been hypnotised, I love your gypsy eyes,” Jimi Hendrix’s song released 45 years ago and I was humming it the other day in 2013! Well, some things last forever, some musicians and their admiration for eyes! Yes, eyes! I kept thinking and realised the trend of eyewear in the music industry is a never ending one.
In India, independent rock musicians started wearing eyewear that would make a statement and when we talk about this, the first person who comes to my mind is definitely Subir Malik from ‘Parikrama’. His round eyeglasses are still in trend as they were back in the 90s.
Today, we can see a lot of Indian bands wearing quirky and whacky eyewear on the stage, as well as off it. The trend of funky eyewear comes from genres such as Rock, Electronica, Alternate Rock, Dub step and Punk. Members of one of the late 90s band ‘Zero’ were spotted wearing funky sunglasses like the round bubble ones.
Round shape eyewear and Aviators are much in demand these days. But do we know ‘LIVE Banned’ is boldly wearing these shapes with quirky patterns on them! The band’s front man Amrit Rao wears trippy round sunglasses on stage and the rest of the members go for Aviators and Wayfarers in bright colours and patterns and also sometimes funny whacky shapes.

When we talk about Indian bands and their modern funky eyewear, how can we forget the epic Indian Electronica act, Shaa’ir and Func! Monica Dogra and Randolph Correia took quirkiness to a completely another level by wearing all kinds of jazzy sunglasses, right from bubbles to round ones, Wayfarers to batman eye mask and a lot many distinctive ones. Their fashion has become a rage and I can’t stop but admire their eccentricity.

Shaa’ir and Func be cool!
Many shades of Randolph Correia
A lot of other Indian musicians have brought these funky sunglasses wave to the country that just keeps growing with time. Vishal Dadlani, Ravi Iyer, Nirmika and many others are wearing the ‘sexy eyes’- look!
On stage hypnotise the world!
If you think musicians are the only ones following this trend, you are absolutely mistaken! You can see fans all around India wearing exceptionally groovy eyewear during music festivals.
